New Path

The top two names from the incoming freshman class are now gone. But the new coaching staff have quickly filled these holes by getting late committments from Kyle Fogg and Garland Judkins. They may not have the star power or give the immediate greatness that could have been provided by Jennings, but maybe they make us better for the future. It was national news last week when Lute commented on never recruiting one and done players again. (Let’s hope he means players like O.J. Mayo who never contemplate a 2nd year, because Jerry D was originally going to stay longer!) And maybe this is a solid path for the ‘Cats to take. Looking at the last 3 National Championships, we see upperclassmen heavy Kansas and Florida taking home the titles. If Arizona maybe backs off the NBA-ready high schoolers and focuses on other players, they can build a championship caliber team that will have us popping the champagne like it was 1997 all over again. Then again, the runner ups in these Championships were led by freshman players (Rose, Oden, Conley Jr.) And in 1997, Miles may have been the “Cool ‘Cat,” but it was freshman Mike Bibby who was the real MVP.
Let’s just hope Fogg or Judkins is the next Stephen Curry/Gilbert Arenas (players who did not get the high rankings but are pure ballers). I mean if one of them averages 32 points in the Tournament, I think we will be golden. Arizona’s class went from unstoppable to a group of possible role players. This will probably hurt us this year, but let us just hope that in three years it pans out to work wonders for the ‘Cats. But it would also help if Arizona added a Mike Bibbyesque player in three years for good measure.
