Pac-10 Ain’t Nothing to Mess With

So the Pac-10 is good. Highlighted by Arizona’s 70-0 blowout (!), leading the nation in both scoring and defense, the conference is looking legit. And this may be a cause for worry for Arizona.
- USC looked more dominant than ever with a blowout at Virginia, which has now garnered them enough votes to take the #1 ranking in both the AP and USA Today Polls.
- ASU did not look like Arizona when they played FCS team NAU, but they won easy and are ranked #15 in the AP and #14 in the USA.
- Oregon looked like a juggernaut in their win over Washington, blowing them out 44-10. They are now #18 in the AP and #16 in the USA.
- UCLA, after losing their top two quarterbacks in the offseason, looked doomed after Kevin Craft threw four picks in the first half against ranked Tennessee, but their great defense and special teams led them to a big opening week upset. This was enough to push them to the #23 spot in the AP, and one vote out of the USA poll.
- California was very impressive against Michigan State. They do not seem to have any offensive woes after putting down 467 yards of total offense. They are barely out of both the AP and USA Today polls and could sneak in very soon.
- Arizona… 70-0. 2 AP votes and 8 USA votes. Soon…very soon.
- Stanford was not supposed to beat Oregon State. Then again, they were not supposed to beat ‘SC last year. And against the Beavers, the Cardinal looked very very good, and could be the real deal. They got 1 USA Today vote.
- Oregon State is the second most consistent team in the conference behind USC in the past few years. They did not look good at all last week, but they will be a strong team in the end.
- Washington did not look good against Washington. But they still have Jake Locker, and they will not be a push over as long as he is still there running and gunning.
- Washington State is not good. They are something to mess with. Oklahoma State ran them off the field, but then again… they’re coach is 40! (never gets old)
The conference is strong, as usual. And games that were once looked at as possible easy wins (UCLA and Stanford) are now definitely no push overs. Obviously Arizona owns the Vandals, but that does not make us bowl eligible or in the upper tier of the Pac. We still have a very long season ahead of us and it will be tough.
…But this does not mean us fans can not keep calling up people in the middle of the night and waking them to say the words, “Seventy to Zero!!!!”
