"Who Needs the Final Four"
by: Soren Hansen
While some are a little disappointed, myself included, that the ‘Cats collapsed this season. Maybe going one and done is for the better. There’s a lot going on this weekend and if the Cats were in Atlanta I don’t know where I would devote my attention.
As mentioned last week the ‘Cats went up to Utah to face BYU and Southern Utah. Unfortunately, I’m sad to say that I might be single-handedly responsible for the loss our Gymcats suffered last week. After proclaiming that the ‘Cats would make the Cougars look stiff and frigid, The Daily Universe (the BYU daily newspaper) ran those statements. The team must have used that for bulletin board material as they went out and posted their highest score of the season to beat us 195.675 to 195.300. All is not lost though, except my hopes of Bree Workman calling, as the Gymcats will be in Tempe this weekend competing in the Pac-10 Championships. This is the last opportunity for the ‘Cats to improve their ranking before the NCAA Championships, and if the ASU fans are as supportive of their gymnastics team as they are of their basketball team there should be plenty of seats. For those of you that won’t be able to attend live, don’t worry Fox Sports Net is showing a replay on April 6, so set your TiVo.
The Pac-10 is referred to the as the “Conference of Champions” and if you didn’t know why, look no further than the upcoming schedules of the Baseball and Softball teams. Both open up conference play this weekend with two of the most daunting tasks on the schedule. The baseball team plays host to defending College World Series Champs Oregon State this weekend at Sancet Stadium. The two teams are eerily similar and actually have the top two pitching staffs in the conference. The ‘Cats are riding an 8 game win streak including a big 6-5 victory over ASU on Wednesday in the Challenge at Chase and look to really establish themselves as one of the elite teams in the country. OSU is probably shaking in their boots cause the ‘Cats are anything but intimidated. When half of the ambiguously gay duo, Preston Guilmet, was asked if this series might carry any extra weight he replied,
"Nope, not at all, First Pac-10 series. We're ready to turn it on and get going."
Wait, we’ve won 8 straight, 22-6 overall, and haven’t even turned it on? I’d hate to be a Beaver any weekend but if you are there’s probably no worse time to be one than tonight at 7 or Saturday at 6. Actually, who am I kidding, with their student body, it’s not good to be an OSU Beaver anytime.
Also taking on what might be its toughest task the No. 5 Softball team travels up to Seattle to take on No. 16 UW today and then turns right around and heads down to play No. 14 UCLA tomorrow. I’m sure you’re wondering why we’re making such a hectic road trip. Well the answer is simple WSU and USC have pretty much already conceded defeat and instead of getting humiliated by us and the rest of the conference, they don’t even bother assembling a softball team. Maybe they put those scholarships towards their badminton team. I’ve heard Cougars really know how to handle a cock, a shuttlecock that is.
As always be sure to check back in next week for results, Bear Down and as always, “Stay Classy Old Pueblo”
